Introduction to Physical Geology
Brooks Cole | June 23, 1997 | ISBN-10: 0030243483 | 432 pages | PDF | 18MB

Written for an introductory one-semester geology course, this text is a brief version of Thompson/Turk’s MODERN PHYSICAL GEOLOGY. Thompson/Turk’s brief text offers professors a more streamlined alternative to the longer, more detailed introductory text. INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL GEOLOGY emphasizes human-environment interactions and discusses the latest research in physical geology. Beautiful illustrations and clear writing style set this text apart from other geology texts.
Gray Thompson is Professor of Geology at The University of Montana, where he teaches Introductory Geology, Mineralogy, Summer Field Mapping, and graduate courses in Clay Mineralogy and Shale Petrology. He has published more than twenty research papers in international journals, mostly co-authored with his students. He is also a mountaineer and professional guide with first ascents, many with Jon Turk, of peaks and routes in the Rocky authored Mountains, Alaska, the Yukon, Baffin Island, the Alps, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas. He has many articles published in international climbing magazines and journals, and has been the subject of other articles in these publications. Many of the photographs in this text were taken by Thompson and Turk on their climbing trips and expeditions over the past 15 years.

The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution (Audiobook) By Sean B. Carroll
Publisher: W. W. Norton 2006 | 7 hours and 57 mins | ISBN: 0393061639 | MP3 | 324 MB

Picking up where scientists like Richard Dawkins have left off, Carroll, a professor of genetics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo-Devo), has written a fast-paced look at how DNA demonstrates the evolutionary process. Natural selection eliminates harmful changes and embraces beneficial ones, and each change leaves its signature on aspecies’ DNA codes. For example, the Antarctic ice fish today has no red blood cells; yet a fossilized gene for hemoglobin remains in its DNA, showing that the fish has adapted over 55 million years by losing the red blood cells that thicken blood and make it harder to pump in extreme cold. The fish has developed other features that allow it to absorb and circulate blood without hemoglobin. . Carroll points out that by examining the DNA of these ice fish species, it’s possible to map its origins as well as the history of the South Atlantic’s geology. He also uses dolphins, colobus monkeys and microbes to demonstrate how deeply evolution is etched in DNA. While searches for the genetic basis for evolution are hardly new, Carroll offers some provocative and convincing evidence.

Physics for Geologists
Publisher: CRC | ISBN: 0415288053 | edition 2002 | PDF | 156 pages | 1,6 mb
All geologists need a broad understanding of science to understand the processes they study and analytical techniques. In particular, geology students need to grasp the basic physics behind these processes, which this book provides in plain language and simple mathematics. It gives the reader information that will enable him to ascertain the validity of what he reads in scientific literature.

Water, an essential component of geology, is emphasized, and many published errors on water are discernible when armed with this text. This updated edition discusses a wide range of topics, including electromagnetic radiation from optics to gamma rays, atomic structure and age-dating, heat and heat flow, electricity and magnetism, stress and strain, sea waves, acoustics, and fluids and fluid flow. The book gives basic definitions and dimensions and also some warnings about misunderstanding mathematical statistics, particularly of linear regression analysis, and unenlightened computation.
Facts on File | 2007-11-30 | ISBN: 0816059349 | 224 pages | PDF | 41,4 MB

Tropical forests are the most diverse and complex of the world’s ecosystems. They are also among the most vulnerable and threatened habitats on Earth. Their value to humanity is immense through their influence on the atmosphere and global climate. “Tropical Forests” explores the great biodiversity of forests, from microbes to mammals, as well as the adaptations of organisms to their environment and to the other species surrounding them.
The interactions between organisms and their physical surroundings are examined, as are the processes linking the two into an integrated ecosystem. This accessible book portrays the importance of tropical forests with a balance of factual accuracy and a sense of wonder. The chapters are arranged in a logical structure, beginning with the physical setting, including the geography, geology, and climatic conditions of tropical forests. Diagrams, full-color photographs and illustrations, and informative sidebars highlight the function, value, and sheer beauty of this remarkable ecosystem.

Encyclopedia of Earthquakes And Volcanoes 3rd Edition (Repost)
Facts on File | 2006 | ISBN: 0816063028 | Pages: 368 | PDF | 17.40 MB

From aa to Yellowstone, if it’s got anything at all to do with earthquakes or volcanoes, you’re likely to find within the pages of this updated encyclopedia from science journalist David Ritchie and Rutgers geology professor Alexander Gates.

The 1,000-plus alphabetical listings range from historical volcanoes and quakes (both famous and obscure) to entries on specific seismic phenomena (everything from parasitic cones to jökulhlaup) and general geological principles, including a few excellent in-depth discussions on topics like plate tectonics and seismic wave types.

The encyclopedia also contains a lengthy bibliography, a list of Internet resources, a chronological listing of notable quakes and eruptions, and a handful of unforgettable eyewitness accounts (after the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79, apparently Pliny the Elder’s party went out “having pillows tied upon their heads with napkins; and this was their whole defense against the storm of stones that fell around them”).

With its clear, newspaper-style entries, the Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes will be navigable even to geo-newbies, but its a-to-z organization makes it more useful as a reference than as a stand-alone text. (Then again, given its liberal cross-referencing, you can easily find yourself led to a long, enjoyable read.)

David Banks, “An Introduction to Thermogeology: Ground Source Heating and Cooling”
Wiley-Blackwell | 2008-05-02 | ISBN: 1405170611 | 352 pages | PDF | 5,4 MB

The use of the heat stored in the shallow subsurface for space heating (ground source heat) is widely used in North America and many European nations, such as Sweden, and is regarded as the most important and reliable ‘green’ space heating technology. In many nations, including Britain, the technology remains poorly understood and under used. This situation is about to change, however, with the UK market for ground source heat pumps growing at over 100% per annum.

This book offers practical guidance and will equip engineers, planners and geologists with the fundamental skills to assess and implement this new technology and to introduce them to the science behind thermogeology.

Publisher: Wiley | Pages: 140 | 2001-05-09 | ISBN: 0471386952 | PDF | 9 MB

Yannis Tsividis gives us a great beginners book into electronics. I found the instruction very concise and though it seems basic to the casual eye, is extremely helpful in learning from the beginning…where anyone should start, right? I learned about nor gates which was extremely fun and interesting, including trying to create my own schematic of a closed circuit relay.

Once you can master the basics you are ready to go on to more advanced electronics, which can include building your very own radio! The diagrams and overall instruction in this book are layed out easy to understand. I have a vast background in Geology but want to further my horizons by learning other fields, and with looking into electronics I found this book to be a good starting point.

Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution
Harper Perennial | 2007 | ISBN: 0061233501 | Pages: 368 | PDF | 2.22 MB

Though he takes a different tack than Wyller (above), Miller tries to draw a straight line between two apparently opposing ideas: the theory of evolution and belief in a creator. In a more humanistic account than Wyller’s, Miller, a professor of biology at Brown University, explains the difference between evolution as validated scientific fact and as an evolving theory.
He illustrates his contentions with examples from astronomy, geology, physics and molecular biology, confronting the illogic of creationists with persuasive reasons based on the known physical properties of the universe and the demonstrable effects of time on the radioactivity of various elements. Then standing firmly on Darwinian ground, he turns to take on, with equal vigor, his outspoken colleagues in science who espouse a materialistic, agnostic or atheistic vision of reality. Along the way, he addresses such important questions as free will in a planned universe. Miller is particularly incisive when he discusses the emotional reasons why many people oppose evolution and the scientific community’s befuddled, often hostile, reaction to sincere religious belief. Throughout, he displays an impressive fairness, which he communicates in friendly, conversational prose. This is a book that will stir readers of both science and theology, perhaps satisfying neither, but challenging both to open their minds.
47. The Solar System—Earth’s Neighborhood
48. The Lonely Planet—Fermi’s Paradox

Imagine coming upon Earth as a traveler from another galaxy. It wouldn’t take you long to discover Earth’s fascinating variety. The combination of continents, oceans, and atmosphere makes it unique among all the planets in the solar system, and perhaps in the galaxy. These features also create the conditions for life in all its diversity.

But where did the land, water, and air come from? And how do these systems work together to produce the complex phenomena that are evident everywhere on this beautiful planet? Consider these cases:

* The steady, slow decay of radioactive elements deep inside Earth provides the heat that keeps our planet at a slow boil, moving massive amounts of mantel rock in a cyclic pattern of convection and creating plate tectonics.
* A mid-ocean ridge system snakes around Earth like the seam on a baseball. The slow drift of Earth’s tectonic plates—moving at the rate that hair grows—splits the ridges apart, pulling rock up to fill the gap.
* One of the most energetic environments on Earth is where land and ocean meet: the seashore. Waves crashing against the coasts of North America can be heard as background static on seismometers located at the center of the continent.

An Astonishing Journey

How the Earth Works takes you on an astonishing journey through time and space. In 48 half-hour lectures, you will look at what went into making our planet—from the big bang, to the formation of the solar system, to the subsequent evolution of Earth. You will travel to the center of our planet and out again, charting the geologic forces that churn beneath our feet to push the continents and seafloor around like so much froth on the surface of a pot of soup.

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis are byproducts of our planet’s ceaseless activity, and you will focus on specific examples of each to learn why and when they occur. Volcanic activity has produced the atmosphere as a side effect, and you will learn how this sea of air functions at the global scale. Earth’s surface is mostly water, and you will explore the cycling of this vital substance throughout the planet, along with its role in climate, erosion, plate tectonics, and biology.

Not only are humans at the mercy of our planet’s natural forces, but we ourselves have also become agents of change. We are altering the Earth’s land, water, and air faster than any other geologic process. This will be another theme of your journey: how humans have transformed watersheds, leveled mountains, changed the balance of gases in the atmosphere, and caused the extinction of enough species to hasten the end of the 65-million-year-old Cenozoic era. It is vitally important that we understand the nature of our geologic powers, if we are to have any hope of controlling them.

Your Guide: A Scientific Sherlock Holmes

Professor Michael E. Wysession is the ideal guide for this expedition. A geophysicist with a specialty in seismology, he has developed techniques for using seismic waves from earthquakes to deduce the three-dimensional structure of the interior of the Earth. Like a scientific Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Wysession uses this approach to “see” into a realm that was previously more mysterious than galaxies billions of light years away.

As a leader in geoscience education, Professor Wysession has wide experience teaching Earth science to students from high school through the advanced graduate level. For this course, he assumes no prior background in science and introduces all the concepts you will need to understand how the Earth works—from basic physics, chemistry, astronomy, and biology to the fundamentals of geology, mineralogy, hydrology, and atmospheric science.

Each lecture builds upon preceding ones to deepen your understanding of key concepts. For example, Professor Wysession spends the first four lectures laying the groundwork for the introduction of plate tectonics in Lecture 5. Almost everything he discusses thereafter relates in some way to this revolutionary theory, which is as instrumental to Earth science as the Copernican theory is to astronomy.

How the Earth Works is the perfect complement to The Teaching Company’s in-depth geology series, Nature of Earth: An Introduction to Geology. Taught by Professor John J. Renton, that course covers Earth’s minerals, rocks, soils, and the processes that operate on them through time. How the Earth Works also touches on these subjects, but it ranges farther afield to investigate Earth as a system, as one might study a complicated machine.

Such a focus makes this course truly a user’s manual to the planet. Whether your interest is geology, cosmology, biology, climate science, or even human history, Professor Wysession shows how these perspectives fit into the comprehensive picture of our planet.

Fitting the Pieces Together

You don’t have to travel far to realize that we live in a world of startling contrasts—in landforms, natural resources, flora and fauna, climates, vulnerability to natural disasters, and other characteristics. Professor Wysession shows that these different features are like interlocking puzzle pieces. Learning how the different pieces fit together gives you insight into some very interesting questions:

* Why is there gold in California and coal in Indiana, and not the other way around?
* What does the tilt of Earth’s axis have to do with the evolution of deciduous trees?
* Why are volcanic eruptions predictable, but earthquakes (so far) are not?
* What is the link between the shape of Earth’s orbit and the size of mammals?
* How does the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates affect climate change?
* What does the mid-ocean ridge environment have to do with the origin of life?

Get “Under the Hood” of Earth

How the Earth Works includes many simple activities that make concepts clear. Whether through illustrating the viscosity of magma with day-old oatmeal or showing how a laptop computer can double as a seismometer, Dr. Wysession believes learning works best when you demonstrate and describe basic principles. You will marvel at the lessons he can impart—and that you can do yourself—with a chocolate bar, modeling clay, an orange, and even a piece of Afghan flatbread (which nicely reproduces the complex faulting seen along the mid-ocean ridge system). He also brings in intriguing rock samples with wondrous stories to tell about the history of our planet.

In addition to giving you the pleasure of looking under the hood of Earth and understanding how it is put together and how it works, this course provides a new context for understanding contemporary events and issues such as natural disasters, climate change, resource scarcity, and renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. You may also be surprised to learn the central role that Earth’s ceaseless activity has played in historical events, from the origin of civilizations to the fall of Rome and the voyages of Leif Eriksson.

Finally, think back to that traveler from another galaxy. The space voyager’s first impression of Earth would doubtless be of its sheer beauty: its intensely blue oceans, brilliant white polar caps, tan deserts, and deep greens of rainforest, overlain by graceful swirls of clouds. How did it all come about? What was it like in the past, and what will it be in the future? What is the role of life in this intricate system? Prepare to investigate the miracle and mystery of the amazing planet that nurtures us all.
