From the chat codes “PAW” or “Code 9″ that teens use to let their friends know that parents are eavesdropping, to the high-powered, computer-driven encryptions used by governments to prevent foreign powers from stealing classified information, covert language is ubiquitous in our society. Now, in Secret Language, Barry Blake takes the reader on a fascinating excursion down this mysterious trail of words, ranging across time and culture. With revelations on every page, and sample codes and puzzles for the reader to crack, it will entertain everyone with an urge to know more about the most arcane and curious uses of language.

From backmasking to the Enigma Machine, from magic words to literary symbols, here is a lively, engaging tour of languages that hide their meanings from all but a chosen few. Blake explains the difference between ciphers and codes (Morse code, oddly enough, is not a code but a cipher) and shows how secret messages have been written–and broken–for almost two thousand years. He explores the history and uses of the slang and argot of schools and trades, tracing the stories of centuries-old cants such as those used by sailors and criminals–among them polari, the mix of Italian, Yiddish, and slang once spoken among strolling players and circus folk and most recently adopted by the gay community. He examines the sacred languages of ancient cults and religions, uncovers the workings of onomancy, spells, and gematria, considers the obliqueness of allusion and parody, and celebrates the absurdities of euphemism and jargon.

Anyone who enjoys word games and riddles, who loves finding out the hidden meanings of slang or argot, or who delights in spy novels or real-life tales of espionage, will find this volume an endless source of fascination.

For a long time, there has been a need for a practical, down-to-earth developers book for the Java Cryptography Extension. I am very happy to see there is now a book that can answer many of the technical questions that developers, managers, and researchers have about such a critical topic.

I am sure that this book will contribute greatly to the success of securing Java applications and deployments for e-business. –Anthony Nadalin, Java Security Lead Architect, IBM
For many Java developers and software engineers, cryptography is an “on-demand” programming exercise, where cryptographic concepts are shelved until the next project requires renewed focus. But considerations for cryptography must be made early on in the design process and its imperative that developers know what kinds of solutions exist.

The great strides made over the last decade in the complexity and network functionality of embedded systems have significantly enhanced their attractiveness for use in critical applications such as medical devices and military communications. However, this expansion into critical areas has presented embedded engineers with a serious new problem: their designs are now being targeted by the same malicious attackers whose predations have plagued traditional systems for years. Rising concerns about data security in embedded devices are leading engineers to pay more attention to security assurance in their designs than ever before. This is particularly challenging due to embedded devices inherent resource constraints such as limited power and memory. Therefore, traditional security solutions must be customized to fit their profile, and entirely new security concepts must be explored. However, there are few resources available to help engineers understand how to implement security measures within the unique embedded context. This new book from embedded security expert Timothy Stapko is the first to provide engineers with a comprehensive guide to this pivotal topic. From a brief review of basic security concepts, through clear explanations of complex issues such as choosing the best cryptographic algorithms for embedded utilization, the reader is provided with all the information needed to successfully produce safe, secure embedded devices.

The ONLY book dedicated to a comprehensive coverage of embedded security!
Covers both hardware and software-based embedded security solutions for preventing and dealing with attacks
Application case studies support practical explanations of all key topics, including network protocols, wireless and cellular communications, languages (Java and C/ ), compilers, web-based interfaces, cryptography, and an entire section on SSL

Written for readers with at least some Perl programming experience, Mastering Algorithms in Perl delivers a solid library of algorithms written in Perl for business and mathematical computing. From data structures to cryptography and more advanced mathematical algorithms, this book provides a worthwhile guide to extending Perl’s coding capabilities.

The best thing about Mastering Algorithms in Perl is the scope at which it covers the universe of algorithms while refraining from getting bogged down in academic detail. Besides basic data structures–a lynchpin of books on algorithms–the authors provide dozens and dozens of algorithms for sorting, searching, and doing mathematical computations of all kinds. While they discuss “Big-O” notation and assume a general familiarity with math, they don’t overwhelm the reader. (You can even borrow the code without needing a math degree to understand it.) The focus is on efficient, reusable Perl subroutines written and compiled by three Perl experts.

Standout chapters include extending Perl’s already powerful string processing abilities, game programming, and cryptography. Generally, the authors achieve a good mix of more advanced (and less well-known) algorithms, along with the basics. Chances are you won’t need to use all the dozen or so sorting algorithms presented here, but the authors include them all, just in case. As a reference and tutorial, readers can pick and choose what they need for real-world Perl development.

There hasn’t been a book dedicated exclusively to Perl algorithms prior to the publication of this one. In all, Mastering Algorithms in Perl fills a useful niche by compiling a powerful library of Perl algorithms that will be useful for anyone who works with this programming language, whether in business or academic computing. –Richard Dragan

From Library Journal
Perl is very similar to C in syntax, and while Perl doesn’t have the speed of complied C, it has been getting much faster. It also is one of the most portable languages, available for most hardware with no changes in code. It is free, which makes it very attractive to developers. This guide covers everything from data structures, sorting and searching, to sets and matrices, to cryptography, probability, and statistics. Readers must already know Perl, so this is recommended for advanced programming collections.

Writing robust enterprise applications presents a special challenge for developers, but Microsoft has addressed that challenge with the free, downloadable Enterprise Library for the .NET Framework.

Enterprise Library is a collection of application blocks and guidance documents that together provide functionality common to enterprise applications; each application block includes full source code. Lacking in the guidance provided by Microsoft is an overall roadmap to the process of using the application blocks. Effective Use of Microsoft Enterprise Library is that roadmap.

Microsoft application development lead architect Len Fenster explains exactly how to build applications using Enterprise Library application blocks. Fenster covers all seven application blocks as implemented for .NET Framework 1.1, shows how to develop and use a new application block, and explains how Enterprise Library is changing for .NET Framework 2.0.

Readers will learn

* How the Configuration Application Block is designed and can be used at runtime to easily read and write configuration data
* How the Configuration Application Block works at design time for all blocks
* How to use the Data Access Block to create a portable data layer
* How to use the Exception Handling Application Block to implement a policy-driven, application-wide exception handling system
* How to use the Logging and Instrumentation Application Block to log and instrument messages independent of the message destination
* How to add authentication, authorization, role membership, security cache, and profile membership features to an application with the Security Application Block
* How to use the Cryptography Application Block to add functionality to encrypt and decrypt data and create and compare hashes
* How to build your own application block and providers that “snap” right into Enterprise Library

Whether you plan to extend Enterprise Library for your organization, or just use the existing application blocks to add functionality to your architecture in a consistent, extensible, integrated way, this book will guide you through the complexities and help you find a clear path to success.

Chapman & Hall/CRC | 2002-11-12 | ISBN: 1584883383 | 304 pages | PDF | 3,4 Mb

Although much literature exists on the subject of RSA and public-key cryptography, until now there has been no single source that reveals recent developments in the area at an accessible level. Acclaimed author Richard A. Mollin brings together all of the relevant information available on public-key cryptography (PKC), from RSA to the latest applications of PKC, including electronic cash, secret broadcasting, secret balloting systems, various banking and payment protocols, high security logins, smart cards, and biometrics. Moreover, he covers public-key infrastructure (PKI) and its various security applications.

Throughout the book, Mollin gives a human face to cryptography by including nearly 40 biographies of the individuals who helped develop cryptographic concepts. He includes a number of illustrative and motivating examples, as well as optional topics that go beyond the basics, such as Lenstra’s elliptic curve method and the number field sieve. From history and basic concepts to future trends and emerging applications, this book provides a rigorous and detailed treatment of public-key cryptography. Accessible to anyone from the senior undergraduate to the research scientist, RSA and Public-Key Cryptography offers challenging and inspirational material for all readers.

Chapman & Hall/CRC | 2006-01-13 | ISBN: 1584884738 | 256 pages | PDF | 2,3 Mb

Researchers and practitioners of cryptography and information security are constantly challenged to respond to new attacks and threats to information systems. Authentication Codes and Combinatorial Designs presents new findings and original work on perfect authentication codes characterized in terms of combinatorial designs, namely strong partially balanced designs (SPBD). Beginning with examples illustrating the concepts of authentication schemes and combinatorial designs, the book considers the probability of successful deceptions followed by schemes involving three and four participants, respectively.

From this point, the author constructs the perfect authentication schemes and explores encoding rules for such schemes in some special cases. Using rational normal curves in projective spaces over finite fields, the author constructs a new family of SPBD. He then presents some established combinatorial designs that can be used to construct perfect schemes, such as t-designs, orthogonal arrays of index unity, and designs constructed by finite geometry. The book concludes by studying definitions of perfect secrecy, properties of perfectly secure schemes, and constructions of perfect secrecy schemes with and without authentication. Supplying an appendix of construction schemes for authentication and secrecy schemes, Authentication Codes and Combinatorial Designs points to new applications of combinatorial designs in cryptography.

Geometric Programming for Computer Aided Design

Wiley (June 3, 2003) | 815 pages | ISBN:0471899429 | DJVU | 12 Mb

eometric Programming is currently of interest in CAD (Computer Aided Design) and related areas such as computer graphics, modeling and animation, scientific simulation and robotics. A growing interest towards gemotric programming is forecast in the next few years with respect to market specific CAD applications (e.g. for architecture and mechanical CAD) and web-based collaborative design environments.
PLaSM is a general purpose functional language to compute with geometry which the authors use throughout their text. The PLaSM language output produces VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language) files which are used to create virtual worlds. PLaSM blends the powerful algebraic approach to programming developed at IBM research, with a dimension-independent approach to geometric data structures and algorithms, This book shows that such geometric code can be surprisingly compact and easy to write.
It begins by introducing the basic programming with PLaSM and algebraic and geometric foundations of shape modeling, the foundations of computer graphics, solid modeling and geometric modeling of manifolds follows and finally discusses the application of geometric programming. For each topic, the mathematics is given, together with the PLaSM implementation (usually with a few lines of readable code) and some worked examples.
* Combines excellent coverage of the theory with well-developed examples
* Numerous applications eg. scientific stimulation, robotics, CAD, Virtual Reality
* Worked exercises for each topic
* Uses PLaSM language (supplied) throughout to illustrate techniques
* Supported with web presence
Written for Industrial Practioners developing CAD software, mechanical engineers in Graphics, CAD and CAM, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering,as well as programmers involved with developing visualization software.
