Le Goût des autres (DVDrip – 2000)

Three men, three women, opposites, possibilities, and tastes. Castella owns a industrial steel barrel plant in Rouen; Bruno is his flute-playing driver, Franck is his temporary bodyguard while he negotiates a contract with Iranians, his wife Angélique does frou-frou interior decorating and loves her dog. The conventional Castella hires a forty-year-old actress, Clara, to tutor him in English, and he finds her and her Bohemian lifestyle fascinating. Is this love? What would she say if he declared himself? Through Bruno, Franck meets Manie, a barmaid who deals hash. They begin an affair. Are they in love? They joke about marriage. As the women hold back, the men must make decisions.

The Taste of Others
This delicious film tells us, that sometimes we judge people for what we expect them to be but we don’t give ourselves a chance to get to know who they really are. I thought this was a very simple and deep film at the same time, because through a very simple story it deals with the complicated human nature: our insecurities, our lack of acceptance of ourselves, trying to adjust to the way other people want us to be.

Castella is an uncultured but rich business man attracted to his bohemian english teacher,Clara. She’s an actress in her 40’s looking for a fit companion. She doesn’t even consider him and rejects him in his many efforts to win her love. He tries to fit in her circle but is made fun of because of his lack of arts knowledge. At the same time he deals with a very self-centered and shallow wife. So his life seems very empty, while his driver and bodyguard deal with love issues of their own.

Para todos los gustos
En esta comedia que juega a mezclar personajes de distinta condición social, Castella es un ignorante pero enriquecido industrial al que le proponen un negocio suculento. El único inconveniente para él es tener que aceptar durante un tiempo la compañía de un conductor y un guardaespaldas personales. Entre ellos el trato no es nada bueno al principio, pero, pese a sus grandes diferencias sociales y culturales, se verán obligados a conocerse y aceptarse.

Castella est un chef d’entreprise peu porté sur la culture. Pourtant, un soir, en allant par obligation assister à une représentation de “Bérénice”, il tombe en adoration du texte et de l’actrice principale, Clara. Par une coïncidence, celle-ci va lui donner des cours d’anglais, nécessaires à son travail. Castella tente de s’intégrer à ce milieu artistique mais sans grand succès. On ne bouscule pas ainsi les cadres de références et les barrières culturelles sans faire d’histoires.
